About the hospital
Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center is a specialist cancer treatment facility in the Shanghai International Medical Zone in Pudong. It is also known as the Proton and Heavy Ion Center of Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. After clinical trials were completed in 2014, the centre opened to patients in May 2015. It was the first medical institution in China to offer both proton and heavy-ion radiotherapy. Its work is focused on these forms of radiotherapy for cancer, not on general hospital care. News reports note that it has treated more than one hundred patients from outside mainland China.
